Our Story

From a moment of frustration to a mission of love, Katie Spencer’s journey began with a simple observation that sparked a life-changing idea.

While shopping one day, Katie noticed something frustrating—perfectly good produce being thrown away due to a simple labeling mistake. For her, this wasn’t just an issue of waste; it was a problem that hit close to home. Having experienced the stress of making sure her chows had enough to eat during tough times, seeing food discarded so easily felt wrong.

Every year 3 million pets are surrendered due to food insecurity

That’s how Leftover Love was born. Katie’s non-profit organization focuses on rescuing excess food that would otherwise be thrown away and transforming it into healthy, vet-approved meals for pets in need. By creating this bridge between food waste and pet hunger, Leftover Love supports struggling pet owners while addressing a critical sustainability issue.

The organization’s efforts not only reduce food waste but also provide a lifeline for families facing financial hardships,

Through partnerships with farmer's markets, grocery stores, restaurants, and food banks, Katie and her team collect surplus food and give it a new purpose. With the help of dedicated volunteers, these ingredients are transformed into balanced, nutritious human grade meals tailored to meet the dietary needs of dogs and cats. We ensure that that no bellies go unfilled and pets can remain with their loved ones instead of being surrendered to shelters due to food insecurity.

We pay it forward to create a culture of compassion that will take root and last for generations. Small acts of kindness can create great change.
